Many users often initiate something on one device and then continue on another, whether it is for work or leisure. Ensuring seamless communication between these devices, especially for quick file transfers, is a necessity for many users.

This is a particular area in which Apple’s AirDrop excels within its ecosystem. Over the past few years, however, both Windows and Android have also made significant strides. Microsoft’s Your Phone app has become significantly more capable, allowing users to interact with their smartphone directly on their PC screen, while its Mobile Devices service has now granted access to phone content through Windows File Explorer.

Alongside the solutions by Microsoft, one of the most hassle-free ways to transfer any content from an Android smartphone to a Windows PC is with the Quick Share app. This application is free of charge and preinstalled on every phone with Android 6 or newer; it shines due to its ease and speed.

To start, download Quick Share from the official Android website, then double-click the QuickShareSetup.exe file to install it. When opening the app for the first time, Quick Share offers an optional sign-in to your Google account to ease the process of file sharing with your contacts and devices.

For file transfer to work, Bluetooth should be turned on on both the PC and the Android device, and both should be connected to the same Wi-Fi network. In addition, each device’s visibility settings should be changed to let them see each other. By default, this parameter for security reasons is likely set to “Nobody,” which forbids the reception of files.

You can also toggle the PC’s visibility directly from the main Quick Share screen by tapping “Hidden Device” to open a dropdown menu of options. If you aren’t signed into your Google account, you can only choose “Receive from Everyone.” Otherwise, you can also toggle “Receive from Contacts” and “Receive from Your Devices.”

Now, set up your Android device’s visibility. Just swipe down from the top of your screen towards the bottom to open the settings panel and tap on Quick Share. As with the PC, you can choose one of several visibility modes: “Your Devices,” “Contacts,” or “Everyone.” For security, the “Everyone” mode will automatically turn off after about ten minutes.

Once these are set up, sending documents, photos, videos, folders, or any kind of content from your PC to your smartphone or vice versa will be child’s play. To send a file from the PC, drag it from within Windows Explorer to the Quick Share window, or select the “Select” button in the application. To transfer content on your Android, select it on-screen, then tap the “Share” option followed by “Quick Share.”

In both directions, you manually confirm any file transmission on the receiving device. This is clearly a security mechanism to make sure that you will not receive some unsolicited or even malicious content. In all, Quick Share is very cool and a great alternative to Microsoft’s solutions to share files across Android and Windows devices. While it offers more limited functionality compared to the Your Phone app, it’s easier to use and allows you to exchange content without your Microsoft account.
